THE FRIENDS OF THE TAVISTOCK MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL

The Tavistock Music & Arts Festival was launched in 2003 by Tavistock Forward, following the recommendations in the Town Alive report, that indicated the need for both a Music Event in the Tavistock calendar and the need for something to happen in the town over the May Day Bank holiday weekend. Following the generous offer of financial support from the South West Regional Development Agency through TAVI, the Tavistock Market & Coastal Towns Initiative, for its initial three years, the first ‘Tavistock Sings’ Festival was held from the 2nd to 5th May; it took place over four days and comprised six events, with Sarah Walker CBE, as the Festival President, and Simon Ible, as the Artistic Director. Other sponsors in 2003 included West Devon Borough Council and Tavistock Town Council, as well as some local businessmen. The Festivals in 2004 and 2005 followed a similar pattern, with the numbers of events and venues increasing to five days.

In 2006 we entered a new phase with the Festival taking place, as we knew from the outset, without the TAVI funding; thanks to the considerable generosity of our sponsors, in particular Henrietta, Dowager Duchess of Bedford; a most successful event, consisting of twelve events in six venues over five days, was enjoyed, with a (very) small sum being carried forward to 2007.

The fifth Festival in 2007 took place over ten days from 28th April to 7th May. In addition to the musical events, classical, brass band and rock, were added folk music, art and photographic exhibitions, poetry readings and other literary events, to make it a genuine Music & Arts Festival. Andrew, 15th Duke of Bedford, honoured us by accepting our invitation to become our first Patron and the inaugural Russell lecture was given.

The Friends of the Tavistock Music & Arts Festival was launched on Thursday, 17th August, 2006, at Alder, Lewdown, thanks to the kind generosity of Bob and Anne Westlake. The aim of the Friends is to support the Festival financially over the long term, as well as to give the opportunity for us to meet during the remainder of the year in support of the Festival. Friends events are held at regular intervals throughout the year and our first birthday party was held, again at Alder, on 29th August 2007.

The 6th Festival took place from 26th April to 5th May 2008, with as its theme ‘Land and Water’, and the 7th Festival from 28th April to 4th May 2009.

NEWSLETTERS

NEWSLETTER No. 9 November 2008

I write this, our ninth newsletter, as the programme for our seventh Festival begins to take shape; you will find the draft programme attached if you receive this by email or enclosed if you receive this by post. I hope that you find this exciting and that it may persuade a few more of you to become members of the Friends – an application/renewal form is either attached or enclosed. Thanks to the generosity of the Friends in helping to cover the shortfall on the 2008 Festival, the Board have approved the planning of a 2009 Festival to be held from 28th April to 4th May. If you know of anyone (company or individual) who would wish to sponsor a concert, an event or the Festival as a whole, please put them in touch with me. As is customary, this newsletter is being sent to all those currently on our database. If you know of others who would wish to be on our database, please let me know; likewise, if you wish your name to be removed from our database, please let me know. Further newsletters will be sent at, about, quarterly intervals each year. In those cases where we have your own email address, they will be sent by email; the remainder will be sent by post. The more that we can send by email the better, to keep costs to a minimum; if you receive this newsletter by post, please let me know your email address, if you have one (kirwincj@aol.com) so that it can, in future, be sent electronically.

A series of Friends event will held over the next five months:-

A series of fund-raising lunches/teas/coffee mornings, hosted by various supporters; it is hoped that as many as six of these events will be held before April; for further details or to offer to hold an event, please contact Jaemus Downing—jaemusdowning@hotmail.co.uk

An evening of vocal and chamber music on Wednesday 7th January at the Wharf, following a series of music workshops held during the day; details to follow in the Wharf magazine and in my next newsletter, but if you are interested, please let me know; the workshops are already funded, so it is hoped that the evening event will raise further funds.

A celebration of local music and music makers on Sunday 18th January at the Wharf; details will be published in the Wharf magazine and in my next newsletter; if you are interested in attending/taking part, please let me know.

A Burns Night supper on Friday 23rd January; details later in this newsletter. We hope that at least 50 will attend.

A preview concert prior to the Festival on Wednesday 25th March at the Wharf, publicising the forthcoming production of the Pirates of Penzance as part of the Festival, as well as string playing from South West Camerata, regular supporters of the Festival; details to follow in the March/April Wharf magazine and in a future newsletter, but if you are interested, please let me know; it is hoped that this event will raise further funds as well as publicising the Festival at the end of April.

You are all cordially invited to:- Friday, 23rd January, 2009 – the Friends Burns Supper at the Nicholls Hall in Lydford at 7.30 p.m. for 8.00 p.m. Tickets are £15 (£25 for a double ticket) and will cover pre-dinner drinks and canapés, the traditional four-course dinner with haggis, as well as pot roast beef and vegetarian alternatives, and after dinner entertainment. The piper and soloists are already booked. An application form is attached, so please apply for tickets soon. If you wish to book a table of ten, please let me know. In the organisation of this event, we are most grateful to David and Wendy Sharples.

All our social events are intended as fun events, aimed at giving an environment in which we can get to know each other better, as well as giving us an opportunity to raise funds to support future Festivals. Please try to attend as many of the events as possible.

With best wishes,

Christopher Kirwin

NEWSLETTER No. 7 December 2007

I write this, our seventh newsletter, at the same time as sending the material for the 2008 Festival brochure to the printers; the brochure will be published in mid January and will be sent to you then. When you receive it, I hope that you will find it exciting. As in 2007, Friends of the Festival will be able to purchase their tickets through me at the discounted rates indicated in the brochure. I will send a booking form to all Friends in the New Year. Anyone who has yet to join the Friends but wishes to do so should contact me for an application form.

As is customary, this newsletter is being sent to all those currently on our database, and other databases with which Simon Ible is involved. Sadly, due to Wendy Sharples’s recent indisposition, the planned Burns Night Supper on Friday, 25th January has had to be postponed to 2009; in its place, we have been fortunate to be able to obtain the services of Jenny Coverack, Radio 4’s Book at Bedtime reader earlier this month. So, our next Friends event, to which you are all cordially invited, will be:- Friday 8th February 2008 – 7.30 p.m. for 8.00 p.m.

‘A Feast of Words’ to be held in the Rotary Room at the Cornish Arms, West Street (at the kind invitation of Alan Jones). The evening will comprise of a welcome drink followed by a hot buffet supper. Before, during and after supper, Jenny Coverack will entertain us with a selection of readings.

An application form is attached, so please apply for tickets soon. Numbers will be limited to 35. All our social events are intended as fun events, aimed at giving an environment in which we can get to know each other better, as well as giving us an opportunity to raise funds to support future Festivals. Please try to attend as many of the events as possible.

I wish you all a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

With best wishes,

Christopher Kirwin
